Ramabai, Pandita

Ramabai, Pandita
(1858–1922)
   Educator and Missionary.
Ramabai was born of high-caste Hindu parents near Mangalore, India. She became interested in Christianity in Bengal and then went to England in 1883 to further her education. There she was baptised and in 1886 she travelled to the United States to study educational methods. She was the author of the High-Caste Hindu Woman which did much to waken the Western world to the plight of Indian women. On her return to India, she opened a boarding school in Bombay, which later moved to Poona. She then established the Mukti mission which provided shelter for women and which grew into a highly successful evangelical mission. Among her many other activities, she also made a Marathi translation of the Bible.
